Lighting, shading & comfort

Lighting design — atmosphere you see beforehand.

We plan light like architecture – with 3D rendering, DALI technology and luminaires that belong to your interior. Manufacturer-independent in the design, there to be seen in the rendering, precisely controlled over DALI and KNX.

Our approach

Light is architecture — not the centre of the ceiling.

Four layers of light

Ambient light, accent light, task light, indirect surfaces — every light is given a job. Only their interplay brings rooms alive.

Seeing, not believing

You decide on the basis of realistic 3D renderings with light simulation — cove lighting, wall washers, accents on art and material. No surprise after installation.

DALI precision

Every luminaire individually addressable, dimmed flicker-free down to the lowest levels, regroupable later — the technology behind perfect light.

From our projects

This is what planned light looks like.

The full depth

Planning light is not choosing luminaires.

The classic case: one ceiling outlet in the middle of the room and a dimmer from the DIY store. The result is flat, cold light — barely repairable afterwards, because the lighting points are simply not there. We play the whole keyboard instead: from architectural to decorative lighting, planned long before the first luminaire.

01

Six types of lighting

Architectural lighting, functional lighting, general lighting, indirect lighting, decorative lighting and emergency lighting. Each layer has its own task, its own groups and its own share of the scenes — only together do they make a room that feels different in the morning from the evening.

02

The functional we plan, the decorative in tandem

We plan the functional and architectural lighting ourselves — that is about lighting points, glare control and technology. The decorative layer we like to develop together with interior design studios such as Studio ASH, so that the choice of luminaires and the technical grid speak the same language.

03

DIALux: seeing the house before it is built

We build 3D models with lighting simulation in DIALux and show you your rooms in their later lighting scenes — distribution of brightness, shadow, the effect on walls. You decide from an image rather than from imagination, and at this stage changes still cost no concrete.

04

DALI and DMX

DALI for individually addressable light with groups and scenes, DMX where colour, dynamic effects or large installations are called for. We plan both protocols down to gateway sizing and bus length — in the Riyadh villa there were 800 individually addressed DALI luminaires.

05

Control gear and transformer design

Control gear needs space, cooling and access. We plan compact electronic control gear, its position in the distribution board or in access hatches, cable lengths and spare capacity — so that nobody later has to build control gear in behind a closed ceiling.

06

Lighting coves and light edges

Indirect light is made at shell stage: cove depth, distance from the wall, the shadow gap in the drylining, strip position and luminous flux density we coordinate with the architect and the drylining contractor — in one Basalte new build right down to the geometry of the coves.

07

HCL & biodynamic lighting

Human centric lighting is not a colour mode: tunable white luminaires follow the daily rhythm — cool and activating in the morning, warm in the evening and without the blue content that keeps you awake. Controlled by astro times and scenes rather than by hand at the switch.

08

Glare control & colour rendering

Deeply recessed darklight reflectors, narrow spots on wall surfaces rather than into the eyes, UGR assessment at workstations. Plus high colour rendering and tight binning, so that two adjacent spots do not visibly differ — oak floors and brass do not forgive that.

09

Dimming curves and deep dimming

Driver, luminaire and dimming curve belong together. We check how far a luminaire dims without flicker, match the curve to perception rather than to the percentage figure and watch the inrush currents — otherwise it is precisely the lowest range, the one you need in the evening, that becomes unsettled.

10

Exterior, garden and pool lighting

Façade, paths, trees, terrace and pool are lighting layers in their own right: appropriate IP ratings, underwater lighting, restrained aiming instead of floodlight, time and astro schedules. Scene logic applies here too — a pool evening is not a garden party.

11

Emergency lighting & orientation

We plan safety and orientation lighting alongside: escape routes, stairs and the way to the bathroom. At night, deeply dimmed light on presence detectors is enough — bright enough to see by, dark enough to wake nobody.

12

Everything in scenes and visualisation

Every layer ends up cleanly integrated into lighting scenes, on switches, on the panel and in the visualisation — with transition times instead of hard jumps. So in the end the family operates three buttons rather than thirty luminaires.

From the architectural to the decorative layer, from DIALux to DALI and DMX: for us lighting design is a concept that begins at shell stage — and decides whether a house later looks good or is merely bright.

The route to the light

Four steps from the idea to the scene.

1

Floor plans & conversation

We start with your drawings and a conversation about your daily life: where do you read, cook, entertain, come to rest?

2

Lighting concept & 3D rendering

Room by room the concept takes shape — and you see it before it is built: realistic lighting simulation with wall washers, coves and accents.

3

Luminaire selection

Occhio and other luminaires with ambition: you experience light quality for real, not on a datasheet.

4

DALI/KNX design & delivery

The technology behind it: DALI addressing, scenes, sensors — installed by elektrofabrik, programmed by us.

FAQ

Frequent questions about lighting design.

When should the lighting design begin?

As early as possible – ideally alongside the architect's design stage. Outlets, coves and suspended ceilings can then be taken into account at no extra cost. At shell stage much can still be adjusted; once the plaster is on, every change becomes expensive. The same holds for refurbishments: lighting concept first, then electrical design.

What is DALI and do I need it?

DALI is a digital protocol for lighting control. Every luminaire is given its own address, dims cleanly and can be regrouped in software. DALI makes sense wherever light is to be dimmed, run in scenes or kept flexible later on – in a high-quality detached house, almost always. We plan DALI as part of your KNX system.

Can I see how the light will look later?

Yes. We produce 3D renderings of your rooms with simulated lighting – including variants for evening mood, task light or accent lighting. In addition we sample the key luminaires in reality, so that you can judge colour of light and glare control with your own eyes. That way there are no surprises when you move in.

Do you plan Occhio luminaires as well?

Yes, on demanding projects Occhio is one of our preferred brands – for the quality of light and the consistency of the design. But we are manufacturer-independent: if another luminaire suits the room, the budget or the interior better, that is the one we specify. You make the choice during product selection.

Does smartfabrik also do the installation?

Design, programming and quality control come from smartfabrik. The electrical installation is carried out by our sister company elektrofabrik if you wish – or your own contractor works from our drawings. In both cases responsibility for the lighting concept stays with us, until everything looks the way it did in the rendering.
