Without the project file, nothing on a KNX system can be changed any more — no reassigning a push-button, no adjusting a scene, no extension. That does not mean the system is lost. In the vast majority of cases a complete, maintainable ETS project can be recovered from the devices on the bus.
Company dissolved, sold or insolvent — and with it went the only copy of the project. A claim for its release is of little use when nobody is left who could release it.
The project is password-protected, tied to an old licence or saved in an ETS version nobody runs any more. In practice that is the same as lost.
There is a file — but it is years old. Since then things have been retrofitted, reprogrammed and altered without any of it ever being written back. Anyone who downloads it breaks the system.
We read out which devices are physically on the bus: manufacturer, type, order number, firmware and individual address — the basis for all further work.
The group addresses in use and their links can be recovered from the devices. From this the logic of the system emerges: what switches what.
Where the device models allow it, we also recover the parameterisation — delays, blocking functions, scene numbers, controller behaviour. This is the part that demands the most experience.
A project reconstructed from addresses alone helps nobody. We name group addresses by room and function, so any successor can work with it straight away.
You receive the ETS project, a device list with installation locations and a function overview — handed over cleanly, not as a raw data export.
Whatever cannot be reconstructed, we state clearly. For individual devices a fresh setup is the cheaper route — we say so beforehand, not afterwards.
International too: in villas on Mallorca, the missing project file is a common case — language plays no part in the reconstruction, the bus answers the same everywhere.
Related situations. If you do not know what is installed anyway, it starts with the system readout — reconstructing the file is then one result of it, not a separate job. If the original installer is not just unreachable but someone else is to be responsible permanently, it is about the takeover by a new programmer. And if the property is abroad, remote diagnosis across borders settles whether anyone needs to travel at all.
“A custom quotation” is no help when you are trying to think it through. So here is an anchor — not a fixed price, but an honest ballpark figure.
A detached house of about 150 m², switching and dimming actuators. For that we need roughly a week.
With logic modules it takes longer, with commercial systems considerably longer. Naming is the largest share of the work.
A phone call and an initial indication cost nothing. The figure becomes reliable once we have seen photos of the distribution board or a device list.
Most people who get in touch here have taken over a house and know of the controls only that they exist. That is enough to start with. Four questions, then we talk.
Even "in your case this is not worth doing" is a result we will tell you. Both cost you nothing.

KNX devices store their individual address, their group addresses and, depending on the model, their parameterisation in the device itself. With the right software and the experience to interpret the data correctly, a workable ETS project emerges from this again. How complete it is depends on the installed devices — we clarify that in the diagnosis before you commit.
We do not crack someone else's password — that would be neither reputable nor necessary. We take the other route: we read the system out over the bus and rebuild the project. The result is a project that belongs to you and whose password you set yourself.
Often not for the first step. If an IP gateway is present, we connect remotely by arrangement and get a picture of the system. If there is none, we send you one — your electrician plugs it in, and we read out remotely. Only then do we decide together whether a visit is needed at all.
That depends on the scale — a flat with 30 devices is not the same as a villa with 400. That is exactly why the diagnosis comes first: it delivers the device inventory and the state of the data, and on that basis we can give a reliable effort estimate instead of a rough guess.
